  • Overview

    The Histotechnician reports to the Office Manager. No supervisory responsibilities unless otherwise assigned. He or She performs routine and special procedures. Keeps the manager and Physicians regularly informed about the work in progress and any problems that may occur.

     

     

     

     

     

    Responsibilities

     

    Essential Job Duties and Accountabilities: As assigned but not limited to the following:

    • Maintain and utilize quality control procedures to verify accuracy of procedures and equipment.
    • Process, embed, section, stain, and coverslip all tissue for routine and special stains as requested.
    • Accurately and properly label tissue cassettes and slides with accession number for each patient.
    • Accurately file all paraffin blocks and slides.
    • Maintain the laboratory and immediate work area in a clean and organized manner.
    • Perform and document quality control on equipment. Notify manager of equipment malfunction.
    • Perform other specific duties that are assigned by the lab manager as required.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Skills: Must have the skills equivalent to those taught in an accredited Histotechnology program. Basic knowledge and understanding of computers. Ability to read and understand written protocols, lab reference manuals and memos. Manager large volumes of work accurately. Effective interpersonal skills.

     

    Experience:  1-2 years in the field of histotechnology. Two years of special stain experience preferred.

    Licensure/Certifications/Education

     

    Education:  HT(ASCP) registered or eligible or High School graduate with two (2) years of experience in a histology laboratory performing all of the following: fixation, specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, staining and reagent preparation.
