Responsibilities

Job Summary: The Insurance Verification Specialist ensures accurate verification of medical insurance coverage. This position demands advanced knowledge of medical terminology, insurance plans, and legal terminology. The specialist collaborates with other team managers and patients, providing excellent customer service, and communication. The role involves training, monitoring, and managing performance while promoting teamwork and adherence to departmental standards. 

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • Insurance Verification: 
  • Verify patient insurance coverage by contacting insurance providers and confirming eligibility and benefits. 
  • Identify copay, co-insurance, deductible, and out-of-pocket benefit information for specialist office visits and procedures performed in the office. 
  • Note patient accounts with prior authorization or referral requirements as required for dermatology procedures and treatments. 
  • Accurately document insurance information in patient records and billing systems. 
  • Documentation and Reporting: 
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of insurance verification activities. 
  • Generate reports on verification results and communicate findings to relevant departments. 
  • Identify and report trends or issues related to insurance coverage. 
  • Communication: 
  • Collaborate with billing, coding, and scheduling teams to ensure a smooth patient experience. 
  • Communicate with practices to explain insurance coverage and any potential out-of-pocket expenses. 
  • Problem Solving: 
  • Investigate and resolve insurance-related issues and discrepancies. 
  • Assist in resolving insurance claim denials or appeals by providing accurate verification documentation. 
  • Compliance: 
  • Ensure compliance with all insurance verification regulations, including HIPAA and other relevant guidelines. 
  • Stay informed about changes in insurance policies and procedures.

 

Other duties assigned as deemed necessary by management. 

Qualifications

  • Must have experience with all types of insurance, including Advantages plans, HMO, PPO, Short Term, Medicare, Medicaid, and others.
  • Must meet department standards for general abilities for typing, must have accurate keyboard skills to include proper grammar and correct spelling skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to access data from varied resources and programs.
  • Must be able to multi-task and adjust work pace to meet patient volume demands in a fast-paced environment demonstrating tact, courtesy, and discretion at all times.
  • Must display a positive demeanor and be a role model for dependability, responsibility, and professionalism.
  • Must uphold all aspects of Clinic Standards of Conduct. Holds self to the highest standard of individual ethical and legal business practices and takes appropriate steps to identify, report, and prevent illegal or unethical activity in the workplace.
  • Must meet production standards of the department.

Licensure/Certifications/Education

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent. 
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in a specialist office working in the verification department is required. Related experience must be within the last five (5) years.
  • Must possess advanced medical terminology and knowledge in the medical field.
  • Must have experience with all types of insurance, including Advantages plans, HMO, PPO, Short Term, Medicare, Medicaid, and others.
  • Prefer 4+ years of customer service experience in the related field, medical insurance verification, and a plus if they have experience in billing/payment processing.
