The Medical Assistant will assist Physicians and other Providers by preparing procedure trays, ensuring adequate supplies for the department and assisting with patient care. 

 

Hours: 6:45am-4pm Monday-Thursday (required)

Responsibilities

Job Summary: As a Surgery Tech/MA, you will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive patient care and support within a clinical, surgical setting. Your responsibilities will encompass various tasks, including escorting patients, collecting vital information, preparing procedure rooms, assisting during surgical procedures, and ensuring adherence to company policies and HIPAA regulations.  

 

This position is located at North Atlanta Dermatology (Duluth, GA)

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

    • Escort patients to the exam/procedure room. Assist patients as needed with walking. Collect patient information/history; take vitals, and perform screenings per provider guidelines. 
    • Prepare paperwork for the patient’s current visit and ensure complete and accurate documentation within the patient’s electronic medical record. 
    • Complete pre-operative intake via a one-on-one interview with the patient, explain surgical procedures, and answer any questions within your scope. 
    • Prepare procedure rooms and surgical trays with all supplies needed for procedures. 
    • Comply with all company policies and procedures in adherence to HIPAA regulations. 
    • Drape and disinfect the surgical site, administer an injection of local anesthesia, and use a handheld cautery device to achieve hemostasis. 
    • Assist the physician during all procedures (passing instruments, blotting, cutting sutures, etc). 
    • Bandage surgical sites, prepare proper discharge paperwork, review wound care instructions with patients, and answer any questions or concerns they may have. 
    • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization in an autoclave. 
    • Collect and accurately process specimens. 
    • Prepare pathology and lab specimens. Route to correct lab as required by patient’s insurance. Maintain accurate pathology log. 
    • Remove sutures. 
    • Notify patients of pathology and lab results. 
    • Respond to patient questions in the office and on the phone as instructed. 
    • Schedule or re-schedule appointments with providers, specialists as necessary. Send appropriate records as necessary. 
    • Maintain medication samples, discard out-of-date supplies, and keep appropriate records. 
    • Maintain infection control. Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms, and keep supply cabinets well stocked. 
    • Document all medical instructions given to patients. 

Qualifications

  • Able to triage patient problems. 
  • Be familiar with and compliant OSHA/HIPAA, infection control & Blood Borne Pathogen Standards. 
  • Experience measuring vital signs and preparing patients for appointments. 
  • Experience administering injections. 
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, CPT and ICD-10 codes. 
  • Knowledge of office financial policies. 
  • Basic computer skills and experience in EMR utilization. 
  • Able to operate standard office equipment (i.e. computer, fax, copier, scanner, etc) 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Fluent in English 
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment. 
  • Ability to work in an effective, cooperative, and courteous manner with staff, patients, and visitors. 
  • Must be able to travel to satellite offices as needed 
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize appropriately, and work well both individually and as part of a team 
  • Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instruction.   
  • Ability to spell, sort and file materials correctly alphabetically or numerically.   

Licensure/Certifications/Education

Education and Experience:

  • At least 1 year of recent experience as a Surgical Assistant, Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, LPN or other clinically based patient care experience (highly preferred)
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Surgical Tech program OR bachelor’s degree program in a pre-med or pre-physician’s assistant track (required)
  • An ability to work independently, excellent communications skills, organizational skills and flexibility required
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment and able to work well within a team 
  • Professionalism and strong customer service skills is a must
  • Able to communicate with doctor clearly and concisely 
  • Able to communicate with patients and co-workers in a professional and friendly manner 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time 
  • Moderate amount of talking, bending, twisting, reaching, and balancing. 
  • Use of hands and fingers. 
  • Talking and listening in person and on the telephone. 
  • Handling of materials such as paper, supplies, etc. 
  • Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds. 
  • Risk of exposure to infectious organisms and the possibility of injury due to chemicals and sharp objects.
